Looking for a real world case study for local SEO? Here you go.
Before you jump in to the results you should know how this case study was set up.
Note: This is not a customer, just a case study.
(Actual names of the businesses and keywords may be different than shown below).
For this case study, I choose a keyword that was not in this Google Business Profile’s name . For those who don’t know, if your keyword is used in your business name, Google “should” rank you higher. For example Bret’s Roofing. If someone is searching for the keyword roofing, Bret’s Roofing should rank higher than someone searching for shingle repair.
This keyword was not really used on their website or on their Google Business Profile page. It is listed as a service on their GBP but that’s it.
When choosing a keyword such as this one, rankings will be tough and take longer to improve but it still can be done.
The time (8:30am for example) that the keyword was scanned is similar and time does play a role in the rankings.
Actual case study started Nov 9th, but these are the rankings that were recorded.
Before Nov 6th, there was no strategy in place for improving the rankings for this keyword. Around Nov 9th, a strategy was set in place and as you can see the rankings started to improve. Could this be a coincidence? Maybe, and time will tell. I suscept the rankings to bounce up and down but in a couple of weeks they should improve.
The bouncing up and down of rankings is normal. Rankings will change throughout the day and if you notice a big drop in rankings, you will sometimes find a nice bounce after the algorithm has had a chance to update your strategy improvements.
Side Note: When comparing rankings, always check the number/percentages of Red, Yellow and Green positions. Sometimes you will see the overall score drop but the number of Green increased.
As you can see the above grid looks different. First, the areas that have little to no homes/businesses have been removed. Second, the grid has a smaller radius. The Scan Ranking will appear different between the grids but the goal is the same. Change the red and yellow pins to green.
Note: When the grid is smaller, the pins are closer together and the rankings should appear stronger as you can see.
As more pins turn green and when needed, the grid size will expand to see the rankings throughout the city.
